From Proto-West Germanic *botm, from Proto-Germanic *butmaz (“ground”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰudʰmḗn (“earth, bottom”). Cognate with Old Frisian boden (“ground”), Old High German bodam (“ground, floor”), Old Norse botn (“floor, ground”). Doublet of botm (“bottom”).
