bottom hopping

  1. (fishing) A technique used to imitate bottom-dwelling prey to attract fish, in which an angler casts a jig or lure to the bottom, lifts the rod tip to pull the bait off the bottom (the "hop"), and then lets it sink back down.
    Synonym: walleye jump
