From Old Galician-Portuguese centẽo (“rye”), from Latin centēnus (“a hundred things”), from Latin centum (“a hundred”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱm̥tóm. Cognate with Galician centeo, and Spanish centeno. Doublet of Centeno.
