English

Noun

continuous track (plural continuous tracks)

  1. A track in the form of a metal or flexible belt fitted around a number of wheels to engage the substrate, giving a broader contact with the ground surface, and accordingly to maximise traction and reduce any tendency to sink surfaces. Continuous tracks commonly are designed for relatively heavy vehicles used mainly under off-road conditions; examples include crawlers, bulldozers, excavators, loaders, backhoes, and military tanks.

Usage notes

Continuous tracks are commonly referred to as caterpillar tracks because the Caterpillar Tractor Company and its predecessors were the most prominent suppliers for many years; "caterpillar track" has remained common as a generic trademark in the uncapitalised form.
