Ellipsis of mālum cotōneum (Cydonian apple). From Ancient Greek κυδώνιον (kudṓnion), Κυδωνία (Kudōnía). Variant of mālum cydonium, a translation of Greek μήλον κυδώνιον (mḗlon kudṓnion).
