Etymology
From Sicilian cumpà ~ Neapolitan cumpà (“buddy, pal”, akin to Italian compare, Sicilian cumpari, Spanish compadre, from Latin compater, literally “godfather”). Doublet of compadre. Compare compa for a parallel development within Spanish. See more at the English cognate goombah.
