Etymology

First attested in 1651; borrowed from Latin dēspūmātus, perfect passive participle of dēspūmō (see -ate (verb-forming suffix)), from dē- + spūmō (to foam, froth), spūma (foam, froth, scum) + . Doublet of despume.
