English

Etymology

From double + rotation.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈdʌb(ə)l ɹəʊˌteɪʃən/

Noun

double rotation (plural double rotations)

  1. (geometry) Two rotations (of an object with four or more dimensions) that happen simultaneously along two different two-dimensional planes without interfering with each other.
    • 2023, Ben McCanna, Hannah M. Price, “Curved vortex surfaces in four-dimensional superfluids: I. Unequal-frequency double rotations”, in arXiv, →DOI:
This matrix form makes it clear that a double rotation can be thought of as two simultaneous simple rotations: in this case a rotation of angle in the x–y plane, and one of angle in the (z–w)[sic] plane.

Usage notes

Although a rotation is generally understood as the turning around an axis, this only holds true in three dimensions. In higher dimensions, it is understood as the turning along a two-dimensional plane.
