From Middle High German tump, from Old High German tumb, from Proto-West Germanic *dumb, from Proto-Germanic *dumbaz, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰewbʰ-.
The modern consonantism is Central and Low German (compare Middle Low German dumb, dumm, from Old Saxon dumb). The rare literary variant tumb is a poetic archaism directly borrowed from Middle High German; the expected form of this source is early modern German tumm (now obsolete).
