Etymology
From Vulgar Latin *dunquam, a cross of Late Latin dunc and Latin unquam (“ever”), with the former itself being a cross of Latin tunc (“then”) with dum (“while”). The final /-e/ may reflect an older form */ˈdonkwas/, with adverbial /-s/, for which cf. Middle French doncques.
