Etymology

Contraction of ekíkún, compare with Olukumi órókún, Àhàn égú, proposed to be derived from a root Proto-Yoruba *-kṹ (to kneel). See Yoruba notext (to stick out), and kúnlẹ̀. Equivalent to e- (nominalizing prefix) + kíkún (partial reduplication of kún (to kneel)), literally that which kneels.
