Etymology

Calque of Medieval Latin ingeniārius (one who makes or uses an engine), composed of inherited engenho + -eiro, from Latin ingenium (an engine). Alternatively a calque of French ingénieur composed in the same fashion. Compare also Spanish ingeniero.
