A continuation of forms of Old English ēage (eye) such as ēagenes (genitive singular), ēagenum (dative plural) where pleonastic case endings have been added to ēagan; in Middle English times rebuilt or reinterpreted as eyen (eyes) + -en (plural suffix). See eyen for forms such as eyne where this rebuilding has not occured.
