Etymology
A continuation of forms of Old English ēage (“eye”) such as ēagenes (genitive singular), ēagenum (dative plural) where pleonastic case endings have been added to ēagan; in Middle English times rebuilt or reinterpreted as eyen (“eyes”) + -en (plural suffix). See eyen for forms such as eyne where this rebuilding has not occured.
