From Middle Cornish eithin, from Old Cornish eythinen sg, from Proto-Celtic *axtīnā, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂eḱ-stí-, enlargement of *h₂eḱ- (sharp). Compare Welsh eithin, Breton bezhin, and Irish aiteann.
