French

Etymology

Inherited from Old French alener, from Early Medieval Latin alēnāre, metathesized from Latin anhēlāre (breathe out, breathe forth). Compare Catalan and Occitan alenar.

The initial ⟨h⟩ was added by analogy with Latin halāre.

Pronunciation

Verb

halener

  1. (transitive) to scent (detect the scent of another)
  2. (transitive) to exhale

Conjugation

This verb is conjugated like parler, except the -e- /ə/ of the second-to-last syllable becomes -è- /ɛ/ when the next vowel is a silent or schwa -e-, as in the third-person singular present indicative il halène and the third-person singular future indicative il halènera.
