Etymology

Inherited from Old English hæfen, hæfene, from either Old Norse hǫfn or Proto-West Germanic *habanu, from Proto-Germanic *habanō.

The final vowel is either generalised from the Old English oblique forms or continued from the n-stem variant hæfene, though disyllabic forms continuing the ō-stem nominative hæfen are common even in varieties with little apocope.

    Pronunciation

    • IPA(key): /ˈhav(ə)nə/, /ˈhaːvən/, /ˈhavən/

    Noun

    havene (plural havenes)

    2. (figuratively) A refuge, shelter, or sanctuary.

    Descendants

    • English: haven
    • Middle Scots: havin, havyn, hawin, heavin
