From Old Norse ígull (sea urchin), from Proto-Germanic *igilaz (hedgehog), cognate with Swedish igle (leech), German Igel (hedgehog), Dutch egel (hedgehog). The sense is influenced by Middle Low German egel, ile (leech), which derives a related noun, *egalaz, which is also the source of German Egel, Blutegel (leech), Dutch echel (leech).
