1. (mathematics) a pair of integers ${\displaystyle (i,j)}$ is an inversion pair of some permutation ${\displaystyle \sigma }$ if ${\displaystyle i<j}$ but ${\displaystyle \sigma (i)>\sigma (j)}$.
