Late 16th century borrowing from Late Latin jugulāris, from jugulum (“the collarbone; the hollow part of the neck above the collarbone; the throat”) +‎ -āris (“-ar, -ary”, adjectival suffix); equivalent to jugulum +‎ -ar.
