18th century, from Low German lasch, from Middle Low German lasch, las, from Old Saxon *lask, from Proto-West Germanic *laskw, from Proto-Germanic *laskwaz (dull, lax, sluggish, lazy). Likely reinforced by unrelated French lâche, from Latin laxus.
