linking element (plural linking elements)

  1. (linguistics) An element of morphological analysis, usually carrying no meaning, used to connect words or stems to form compounds.
    • 1995, Christopher Beedham, German Linguistics: An Introduction:
      Many compounds require a linking element or interfix between the parts. Common interfixes are -s, -es, -n, -en, -e.
