Etymology
Ultimately from Arabic مَسْجِد (masjid), possibly via Ta'izzi-Adeni (southern Yemeni) Arabic (noting retention of older *g) and then Maranao masgit. Compare Maguindanao mesjid, Sundanese masigit, and Malay masjid. Doublet of masjid and meskita.
