From translingual Mastigurus (“genus Uromastyx”), from Ancient Greek μάστιξ (mástix, “a scourge, a whip”) + οὐρά (ourá, “a tail”). Compare Uromastyx. By surface analysis, mastigo- + -ure (“tail”).
