mintmaster (plural mintmasters)

  1. Synonym of moneyer, the superintendant of a mint, particularly (historical) one responsible for coinage.
    • 1570, John Dee, in H. Billingsley (trans.) Euclid, Elements of Geometry, Preface:
      The Mintmaster, and Goldsmith, in their Mixture of Metals, either of diuerse kindes, or diuerse values: how are they, or may they, exactly be directed, and meruailously pleasured, if Arithmetike be their guide?
  2. Synonym of master of the mint, the national superintendant of all mints.
  3. (obsolete or archaic) Synonym of neologist, a person who coins new words or expressions.
