From Middle Dutch nederlaghe (15th c.), probably after early modern German Niederlage, from Middle High German niderlāge (the act of sinking to the ground). Analysable as neder (nether, down) + laag (layer), though the latter word is used in the obsolete sense of “act or way of lying” (for which now ligging).
