- (historical) a peasant appointed as the representative of a rural municipality (pitäjä)
- (historical) rural police chief (acting as a police chief, sheriff, distrainor and prosecutor)
Usage notes
The second meaning is a derivation of the first, and the role it describes was abolished in 1996, except in the most sparsely populated areas of the country.
