pilot monitoring (plural pilots monitoring)
- (aviation) In a two-pilot flight crew, the pilot not currently handling the primary flight controls, but responsible for maintaining situational awareness, monitoring the instruments, cross-checking the actions of the pilot flying, typically working the secondary controls such as the flaps and autopilot as directed by the pilot flying, running check lists, ensuring adherence to SOPs, and updating the flight plan and other documentation.
Usage notes
The pilot in command (PIC) of the flight, whether PF or PM at that time, retains strategic control, is responsible for initiating CRM, and has ultimate responsibility for the safety of the aircraft.
