Inherited from Proto-Bantu *-pɪ́tɪda (“Applicative of *-pɪ́ta (“to go”)”). By surface analysis, -pita (“to go”) + -ira (“applicative suffix for verbs where the penultimate vowel of the stme is either 'a', 'i' or 'u'”). Cognate with Swahili pitia.
