Inherited from Proto-Slavic *pьrati. Cognate with Russian прать (pratʹ), Bulgarian пера (pera), Slovak prať, Czech prát. Non-Slavic cognates include Old Armenian հարկանեմ (harkanem, beat, strike).

1   Croatian spelling: others omit the infinitive suffix completely and bind the clitic.
