From puta (to come out, to emerge, to appear) + -nga.

For sense of publication/edition, compare with parallels within the same language family e.g between Malay terbit “to come out, to rise (of celestial bodies), to appear” and keluar “to come out” to terbitan ~ penerbitan and keluaran respectively
