1. An informal fallacy in which an effect is mistaken for a cause.

Examples
A known association of a medication with a disease does not necessarily imply that the medication causes that disease; rather, it may show only that people with that disease tend to be the ones who take that medication. To assume the first conclusion is known as reverse causation.
