Etymology

From earlier Tashelhit *wrg, borrowed from a Zenaga-like Berber substratum form *äwrəg, ultimately from Proto-Berber *ăβrəǵ (to grind, crush). Doublet of bri (to grind, to crush).

Cognate with Awjila aβərg (pestle (for crushing dates)).
