From earlier Tashelhit *wrg, borrowed from a Zenaga-like Berber substratum form *äwrəg, ultimately from Proto-Berber *ăβrəǵ (“to grind, crush”). Doublet of bri (“to grind, to crush”).
Cognate with Awjila aβərg (“pestle (for crushing dates)”).
