From Middle High German (w)rīven, from Old High German *(w)rīvan, northern variant of rīban, from Proto-West Germanic *wrīban, from Proto-Germanic *wrībaną. Middle Ripuarian still regularly retained the wr-onset, which was later either reduced or merged with fr-.
