Etymology

From Old Norse ryðja, Proto-Germanic *rudjaną, a variant of Proto-Germanic *reudaną (to clear) (in Old Norse rjóða) and Proto-Germanic *rudōną (to clear) (cognates in German roden, rotten, reuten).
