Short for supersonic combustion ramjet.

scramjet (plural scramjets)

  1. (aeronautics) A jet engine capable of propelling an aircraft at hypersonic speeds, in which combustion of the fuel and air mixture occurs at supersonic speeds.
  2. An aircraft that uses such an engine.
