second gas effect (plural second gas effects)
- (medicine) A phenomenon in which a rapid uptake of a large volume of a gas (e.g. nitrous oxide) taken up from alveoli into pulmonary capillary blood leads to an increase in the concentration of gases remaining in the alveoli.
