German
Etymology
Borrowed from English start + -en; compare with Dutch starten and native High German stürzen.
Pronunciation
Verb
starten (weak, third-person singular present startet, past tense startete, past participle gestartet, auxiliary haben or sein)
- (intransitive) to start (race car, airplane, etc.) [auxiliary sein]
- Die Maschine ist pünktlich gestartet.
- The plane started on time.
- (transitive) to start something [auxiliary haben]
- Ich habe den Computer gestartet.
- I've started the computer.
Usage notes
- Transitive starten is only used as “cause to run/move/proceed” (in a concrete or figurative sense). Possible objects of starten are machines, missiles, operations, projects, events, etc. It is considered improper to employ the verb in the sense of “begin to do”, in a sentence like “he started smoking”, which to avoid the charge of Denglisch must be expressed by anfangen or beginnen, though we are little embarrassed to attest the very usage:
- 2025 November 7, “Sankt Martin im Kaffee-Klön”, in Westfalen-Blatt, number 259, published 8 November 2025, page BF18:
- Der nächste Kaffee-Klön der offenen Seniorenarbeit des Diakonieverbandes Brackwede soll ein besonderer werden: […] Der Klön startet um 14:30 Uhr mit Kaffee und Kuchen. Um 15 Uhr startet das Singen. […]
- The next coffee-talk within the work for seniors of the diaconal collective Brackwede is devised to be peculiar: […] The talk kicks off at 14:30 h with coffee and cake. At 15 h singing begins.
Conjugation
1Rare except in very formal contexts; alternative in würde normally preferred.
