studium generale

  1. a school in which pedagogues with academic titles (doctores, magistri, professores, etc.) could teach students from other countries, and could offer licenses in multiple disciplines (compare to studium particulare). Historians often designate a school's recognition as a studium generale as one of the key characteristics of it being a university.
    Cambridge was confirmed as a studium generale by Papal Bull in 1318.
