Finnish

Etymology

Origin uncertain, with no known cognates (Karelian šunta, šuunta, Estonian suund are borrowed from Finnish). The variant sunta is also attested, and it is not known which is original. Possibly borrowed from Baltic (compare Lithuanian siuntà from sių̃sti (to send), but note that the phonology of the Baltic word remains unclear; see Proto-Baltic *sjúnsti) or Slavic (compare Russian суд (sud); while phonetically possible, the semantic shift is dubious, although SSA compares it to the polysemy of German richten (to direct; to judge)).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈsuːntɑ/, [ˈs̠uːn̪t̪ɑ̝]
  • Rhymes: -uːntɑ
  • Syllabification(key): suun‧ta
  • Hyphenation(key): suun‧ta
