Etymology

From Proto-Norse ᛏᚨᚾᚺᚢ- (*tanhu-), ᛏᚨᚾᚺᚹᛁᛃᚨ- (*tanhwija-). Compare Old Norse and Swedish , tåg. Cognate to Finnish tanhua and Votic tanava (street) (Kattila). The sound change of /ɑ/ -> /æ/ in the first syllable is irregular, the regular variants tanav, tanev can be seen in dialects.
