Etymology
From Proto-Norse ᛏᚨᚾᚺᚢ- (*tanhu-), ᛏᚨᚾᚺᚹᛁᛃᚨ- (*tanhwija-). Compare Old Norse tá and Swedish tå, tåg. Cognate to Finnish tanhua and Votic tanava (“street”) (Kattila). The sound change of /ɑ/ -> /æ/ in the first syllable is irregular, the regular variants tanav, tanev can be seen in dialects.
