Potentially from Vulgar Latin *trānsfrīcō (“to rub across”); Klein instead suggests the Italian has ultimate origin in Arabic تَفْرِيق (tafrīq, “distribution, dispersion”), reshaped to match the native prefix tra- (“trans-”). Cognate with Piedmontese tràfich/tràfic and Sicilian tràficu.
