From Old Danish vanlig, vaanlig, from Old Norse vanaligr. Equivalent to vane (“habit, practice”) + -lig (“-like, -ly, -ous”, adjective-forming suffix). Cognates include Swedish vanlig and Icelandic vanalegur.
