Icelandic

Etymology

Literally, to be in the way.

Verb

vera fyrir

  1. to be in the way
    Þú ert fyrir.
    You are in the way.
    Þú ert fyrir mér.
    You are in my way.
    Er ég fyrir þér?
    Am I in your way?
    Ekki vera fyrir, stráksi.
Don't be in the way, kiddo.

Usage notes

  • This verb phrase is a little difficult, as the basic phrase vera fyrir ("be in the way") can split up throughout the sentence, e.g example er ég fyrir þér? (am I in your way?).
  • Saying er ég þér fyrir (am I [to] you in the way) meaning "am I in your way" can be said, though it sounds archaic.
