Etymology

From Middle English wykely (adverb), equivalent to week + -ly (adverbial suffix) or week + -ly (adjectival suffix). Compare Dutch wekelijks (weekly), German wöchentlich (weekly), Danish ugentlig (weekly), Norwegian ukentlig (weekly), Icelandic vikulega (weekly), Swedish veckovis (weekly).
