The parish was created in 1894 from the rural parts of the old parish of Halstead, and covers areas to the north, west, and south of the town. The largest settlement in the parish is the village of Greenstead Green. Other settlements in the parish include the hamlets of Burton's Green, Plaistow Green, and Whiteash Green. At the 2021 census the parish had a population of 665.
