«Sweet Sacrifice» fue compuesta por Amy Lee y Terry Balsamo while the production was handled by Dave Fortman.[2] Se grabó en los Record Plant Studios en Los Ángeles, mixed by Dave Fortman at Ocean Way Studios en la misma cuidad y mastered by Ted Jensen at Sterling Sound en Nueva York.[2] The programming was done by DJ Lethal.[2][3] Hablando sobre The Open Door, Lee said that lot of people expected the new songs on the album to be similar with "My Immortal" (2003) before adding that "'Weight of the World', 'Sweet Sacrifice' y 'All That I'm Living For' are so amazing to me because of the adrenaline. Especially when we play them live."[4] She further revealed the inspiration behind the song,
Esta es una canción en The Open Door que trata sobre la misma relación agresiva which was the source of all the songs on Fallen. It was appropriate to put this song at the beginning, but it comes from a much stronger standpoint than Fallen. It's not saying, "I'm trapped in fear and somebody save me." It's saying, "Fear is only in our minds ... I'm not afraid anymore."[4]
The band announced at live concerts and online that their upcoming third single from The Open Door would be "All That I'm Living For," however, due to requests from the band and fan reaction, Wind-up announced that "Sweet Sacrifice" would be the band's third single from The Open Door.[5] The original single was released in Germany on May 25, 2007, featuring a basic and premium version.[6] Elsewhere, it was scheduled for a release on May 8, 2007 through Amazon.com but it was later canceled.[7][8]
De acuerdo con la partitura publicada en Music Notes por Alfred Music Publishing, «Sweet Sacrifice» es una canción de rock, post-grunge y metal alternativo y gótico, está en un marca de tiempo y es interpretada en un tempo moderado de noventa y seis pulsaciones por minuto.[9] Se compone en la tonalidad de fa y el rango de la voz de la vocalista es desde la nota musical la3 hasta la sol5.[9] De acuerdo con Ed Thompson de IGN, Lee canta: «It's true we're all a little insane/But it's so clear now that I'm unchained» —en español: «Es cierto [que] todos somos unos dementes/Pero ahora está claro que soy desencadenada»,[10] con su «voz inolvidable».[3] Algunos críticos encontraron letras oscuras como «I dream in darkness, I sleep to die, erase the silence, erase my life, our burning ashes darken the day, a world of nothingness, blow me away» —en español: «Sueño en [la] oscuridad, duermo hasta morir, borrar el silencio, borrar mi vida, nuestro carbón ardiente oscurecen el día, un mundo de la nada, me fascina» acompañada con «guitarras resonantes» y una sección de cuerdas.[3] Un escritor del sitio Sputnikmusic encontró similitudes entre canciones de su álbum debut Fallen (2003) y «Sweet Sacrifice».[11] Su tema principal es superarse de una relación abusiva.[4][12] Jordan Reimer de The Daily Princetonian concluyó que Lee canta las líneas: «You know you live to break me/Are you still too weak to survive your mistakes?» —en español: «Sabés que vivíste para romperme/¿Todavía eres demasiado débil para sobrevivir a tus errores?» al anterior guitarrista de Evanescence, Ben Moody.[13] Esto de alguna manera fue repetido por Rob Sheffield de Rolling Stone quien dijo que las letras: «One day I'm gonna forget your name/And one sweet day, you're gonna drown in my lost pain» —en español: «Un día voy a olvidar tu nombre/Y un dulce día, te vas ahogar en mi dolor perdido» también le fue dirigido a Moody .[14]
Bill Lamb del sitioweb About.com, lo colocó en su lista de «temas top» en The Open Door con «Lacrymosa», «Call Me When You're Sober», «Your Star» y «Good Enough».[15] En su reseña de The Open Door, Ed Thompson de IGN lo destacó como el «mejor tema» del álbum y lo puso en su lista de «descargas definitivas».[3] Richard Harrington de The Washington Post escribió que «Abundan, [los] rockeros dinámicos en 'The Open Door,' incluyendo 'Sweet Sacrifice,'»[16] entre otros. Brendan Butler de Cinema Blend dijo que «Call Me When You're Sober» y «Sweet Sacrifice» eran las únicas canciones «comerciales»[17] del disco, antes agregó que "those are the only songs that don't excruciatingly wane after a minute."[17]
Sara Berry de St. Louis Post-Dispatch comentó que «the CD's opening track, 'Sweet Sacrifice,' features disquieting lines like 'I dream in darkness/I sleep to die/Erase the silence/Erase my life.' The lyrics are par for the course on this lineup of overwhelmingly melancholy compositions. Still, it's well-executed music, and it's an ideal soundtrack for life's moodier moments».[18] Jon Dolan de la revista Entertainment Weekly encontró que el tema está en un «bruising breakup lament that turns into an anthem of freedom».[10] Dandole una crítica negativa, Alex Nun de musicOMH escribió que el sencillo es «a turgid attempt to recapture past glories, the heard-before riffs and shockingly average vocals act as a slap from the proverbial wet fish».[19]
Se filmó en Burbank entre el 9 y 10 de marzo de 2007 y fue dirigido por Paul R. Brown. The music video leaked onto the Internet on April 4, 2007, after briefly being available for digital download on iTunes Store.[21] It initially premiered on Yahoo! Music on April 5.[22] The video was compared with the psychological thriller film directed by Tarsem Singh, called The Cell (2000). Lee said that the main inspiration is "like we're in the walls of our minds, sort of".[20] Durante una entrevista con MTV News, she further revealed the concept of the video, "It's mostly live performance. It's not so much fluff and flying and tricks and wolves and stuff. It's more really just about the song, and that is unique for us. We usually do crazy stuff. It's gonna be sort of like a video within the video. Since the song is our heaviest single, we really wanted to focus on mostly performance but still have something about it that's really unique. And I think [Paul] really hit the nail on the head."[20] The video starts with Lee laying on a couch and as the song progresses, she starts singing the lyrics "It's true, we're all a little insane, but it's so clear now that I am unchained" while getting up from it. She wears a red dress and a red make-up on her face. Later another scenes, show her singing in a room similar to the thriller The Cell, while the band is performing in another room.[20]
