John Josephus Hicks, Jr. (Atlanta, de Georgia, 21 de diciembre de 1941 - 10 de mayo de 2006) fue un pianista y compositor de jazz.[1]
Biografía
Hicks estudió música en la Lincoln University de Misuri y la Berklee School of Music de Boston. Tocó con Johnny Griffin y con Pharoah Sanders antes de trasladarse a Nueva York en 1963. Allí, tocó con Kenny Dorham, Lou Donaldson y Joe Henderson[2] antes de unirse a Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers (1964–1965) y con Betty Carter[3] (1966–1968, 1975–1980), además de uno de los grupos de Woody Herman (1968–1970).
Otros músicos con quienes tocó incluyen Idris Muhammad,[1] Lee Morgan, David Murray, Joe Lovano, David "Fathead" Newman, Kenny Barron, Sonny Stitt, Roy Haynes, Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard, Jon Hendricks y Roy McCurdy.[4]
