Alguses oli lühendi GCC tähendus GNU C Compiler (GNU C-keele kompilaator). Praeguseks on kogusse lisatud kompilaatoreid ka teiste keelte jaoks: Ada, C, C++, Fortran, Go, Java, Objektorienteeritud C ja Treelang.
