Arte prerromanikoa[1] edo aurrerromanikoa[2] Europako Goi Erdi Aroko artearen garai bat izan zen, Erromatar Inperioaren erorialditik (K.o. 476) erromanikoa hasi zen arte (1000. urtearen inguruan) iraun zuena. Ez da arte estilo bakarra, baizik eta Europako mendebaldeko herrialdeetan garai haietan izan zen arte estiloen multzoa.

Ikerlariek bi ezaugarri nagusi ikusten dizkiote: alde batetik, erromanikoaren aurrekari edo aitzindaria dugu; eta, bestetik, Antzinaroko artearen jarraipena.
Europan garai zailak izan ziren, inbasio ugari izan baitziren Erromatar Inperioaren barruan. Herri berri haiek beren artea ekarri zuten:
Espainian ere baziren hainbat arte mota une hartan. V. mendean germaniarrak sartu ziren lehenengo mugimendu batean, eta bigarren batean bisigodoak azaldu ziren. Ezegonkortasun handiko garaiak izan ziren. Arteari dagokionez, lau bereiz ditzakegu:
Euskal herrian zaila da garai artako eraikin osoak aurkitzea, baina eraikuntza berritan berrerabili diren osagai batzuk gugana iritzi dira, hala nola maiz aurkitzen diren leiho monolitikoak. Hauek Bizkaian agertu dira batez ere[3], naiz eta badiren horrelakoak hegoaldeko beste lurraldetan ere.
