Harjankylä on yksi Kauhajoen kuudesta virallisesta kylästä.[1] Se sijaitsee kunnan pohjoisosassa ja on tyypillinen jokirantakylä, jossa vanhimmat talot sijaitsevat nauhamaisesti Kyrönjoen rannoilla. Kylässä rakennukset on rakennettu tien ja joen väliin, jolloin molemmat kulkuväylät ovat helposti käytettävissä ja ne myös rajaavat tontin. Laajojen peltoaukeiden ja joen lisäksi kylässä on myös suuria yhtenäisiä nevoja sekä metsiä. lähde?

Yhdystie 6900 ja Suupohjan rata kulkevat etelä-pohjoissuuntaisesti kylän läpi Kauhajoen keskustan suunnasta kohti Kurikkaa.[2]
Suomen sodan aikana Kauhajoki ja varsinkin Harjankylä oli venäläisten tuhovimman kohteena.[3] Venäläinen kuormasto joutui jäämään 7. ja 8. heinäkuuta 1808 väliseksi yöksi Harjankylässä sijainneeseen Harjan taloon. Pohjalaisia talonpoikia oli pitkin päivää saapunut kylään noin sata. Talonpojat ryöstivät onnistuneesti venäläisten kuormaston.[4] Parin päivän kuluttua venäläisen kenraali Vasili Orlov-Denisovin kasakat saapuivat tuhoamaan Kauhajokea kostoksi.[5]
Harjankyläläiset ovat pystyttäneet kylään Suomen sodan muistomerkin, jolla he kunnioittavat kylänsä esi-isien työtä. Muistomerkin paljastus tapahtui 16. elokuuta 1998. Kivessä olevan laatan teksti on Liisa Ruismäen käsialaa.[6]
